Ben Schwartz, who voices the lead role in Sonic The Hedgehog, recently revealed he wrote a script for an adult version of The Goonies for Seth Rogen and Adam McKay. The Goonies, released in 1985, follows a group of friends who come across a treasure map that leads them on an adventure to find the massive fortune of the legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy. Along the way, the band of friends is pursued by a family of criminals set out to claim the treasure for themselves.
While the film was successful in its own time, it has gone on to become a full-blown cult classic and a staple of 80s cinema. The Richard Donner-directed film was written by Chris Columbus, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, and featured turns from a handful of up-and-coming talents at the time, including Josh Brolin and Sean Austin in their big-screen debuts.
In an interview with HeyUGuys, Schwartz mentions he had previously written a script that would’ve seen a group, similar to The Goonies gang, back on an adventure as adults after they failed as children. According to Schwartz, the premise would have taken place years down the road, after an adventure where they never wound up finding the treasure. The sequel would have seen the gang’s earlier misfortune spiral them into less-than-successful adults who are given a second chance at the adventure years later. Schwartz didn’t reveal any more about the story other than it had been written for producers McKay and Rogen. Schwartz finished up his thoughts on the subject by heaping praise on the classic film, stating he “loves The Goonies” before moving on with the interview.
Last year, Collider reported the film’s title is 79ers, and has Blockers director Kay Cannon attached to helm the project. The film is being produced by Lionsgate and Dylan Meyer has been brought on to polish the script.
While the idea of a Goonies sequel has been tossed around for years without much success, but it seems like Schwartz may have an interesting angle for a spiritual sequel. After all, it does seem unlikely we’ll ever see the original Goonies cast return for a follow-up film, maybe keeping the spirit alive is the best we can hope for at this point. Then again, given the current trends in Hollywood, it’s only a matter of time till The Goonies starts to generate interest in an inevitable reboot. We already know at least one of the original actors is on board with this idea. In any case we’ll likely find out more about Schwartz’s 79ers as it makes its way through development.
